The first school was organized in 1850 and the first post office opened in 1853. By 1860, Marshalltown had a population of 1,500 people and it grew rapidly thereafter as settlers arrived from all over Iowa and Illinois. In 1868, the town incorporated and began to develop its present-day infrastructure; these include the construction of a water system and sewer line, as well as Streetscape Renewal project which renovated many of downtown streetscape around town square into modern day designs. In 1907, when Des Moines became its own municipality (it had been annexed by Marshalltown two years earlier), Marshaltown became an official part of that municipality with its own police department and streetlights! In 1917 – during World War I – Marshaltown went on record as being one of only three cities in Iowa to support military training for local farmers on their property! Throughout all these years there has never been anything like rapid growth or development within Marshtown; it’s always kept pace with changes both large and small within society itself! The town was founded in 1855 by A.P. Marshall and named for General James K. Polk. The first store in Marshalltown was built by George Wickersham on the junction of State street and First avenue. In 1878, A.P. Marshall donated land to build a courthouse and school district that included present-day Marshalltown and parts of Council Bluffs. The first high school graduated its students in 1909; the last graduating class from Rolla Elementary School took their final examinations there in 1951. In 1928, when Rolla High School closed, Marshalltown organized itself as a independent school district with an all-girls facility as its first school building on Secondstreet near the intersection of Main and Elm streets (now known as Eastern Parkway). In 1955, Rolla Consolidated High School reopened under name Rolla East High School after it merged with other schools within the new district (including Armstrong Agricultural Academy) to become one large high school complex which still operates today as Rolla East High School/Marshalltown Community College (MCC). The original downtown area experienced some revitalization beginning around 2006 when local developers began working on developing what would become known as Town Center mall which would include restaurants, movie theaters and office space on five acres adjacent to Veterans Park across from Douglas Park Mall across from IHOP restaurant inside a former chemical plant site located just east of town center off US Highway 26
