Marion, Iowa is a small town in the US state of Iowa. It is located on the Mississippi River, about 25 miles (40 km) west of Des Moines and 20 miles (31 km) east of Cedar Rapids. The population was 7,314 at the 2010 census. Marion was founded as a small agricultural community in 1847 by farmers George and Nancy Hanks. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century as railroad expansion made it an important transportation hub for eastern Iowa and Midwest America. The now defunct Burlington Northern Railroad served Marion until its closure in 1984. Today, Marion remains largely rural with a strong emphasis on agriculture and cattle ranching. The history of Marion begins with George Hanks, who moved to the area from Ohio in 1847. In 1851 he married Nancy Lyon and founded what would become Marion along the banks of the Mississippi River. By 1870, several other families had also settled in nearby Harlan County and began growing crops such as corn, wheat, oats, potatoes and beans. In 1893-94 developers erected a large warehouse complex known locally as "The Gables". This addition helped stimulate growth around town while also providing employment for many local residents over the years. In 1979-80 planners designed an ambitious master plan to revitalize downtown Marion which included expanding sidewalks, adding a new library/theater complex and creating more public spaces including two parks - one adjacent to The Gables Warehouse Complex where dances were once held each November.,and another larger park located near Interstate 84 just south of town square which has been used for golf tournaments,, picnics,, horse races,,,, etc since its creation." Today's downtown core contains several businesses including two grocery stores- Weiser’s Market & Grocery inside The Gables Warehouse Complex;[2]and Shoprite Supermarkets across from I-84 next to Methodist Church [3]. Additionally there are several restaurants including Pickles Steakhouse,[4] Auntie Anne’s Restaurant,[5] BBQ Supply,[6], Indian Table,[7] Dairy Queen[8], Just Born Bakery & Cafe,[9][10] Midwestern Pizza Company[11],[12], Big League Burger Grill[13],[14], Starbucks Coffee Roasters[15][16][17], Kroger Super Markets.[18],[19][20] There are also several private residences scattered throughout downtown blockages between Second Street eastward to First Street northward with some accompanying streets that lead into additional blocks still remaining undeveloped

In 1916, Marion became an independent state and its citizens voted to name their city after President Woodrow Wilson. The city's first mayor was Wm Kappeler. In 1949, it became part of the Des Moines metropolitan area and has since grown significantly in population and economic significance. Today, Marion is one of the most populous cities in Iowa with a total population of over 14K residents.
Marion was a small town in the Iowa River Valley until it was destroyed by a fire in 1881.
