Marion, Iowa is a small town in the United States located in the western portion of the state of Iowa. The population as of 2018 was 7,898. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines metropolitan area. The name Marion comes from an early settler, David Marion, who named the community after his father-in-law, Johnathon Marion. The first post office in Marion was established on November 3, 1854. The first store in town was opened by Wm. Fenton on December 9, 1855. A sawmill and grist mill were built in town around 1860; they were replaced by a flour mill in 1889. The high school which now stands at 7th and Second Streets was built in 1918; it became a junior college for women in 1978 and became coeducational status again in 1991. In 1933 a new courthouse was erected near what is now First Avenue and US Highway 524; it served as the county seat until 1955 when rural consolidation led to the creation of Polk County. The Native American tribe known as the Sioux had claimed this area for centuries, and their warriors would raid and kill anyone who moved into the area. The settlers began to arrive insearch of new land to farm, but they also encountered resistance. They called themselves "The First People," and decided that they would be the only ones living in this area for years to come. In 1871, John Hennepin County was created from parts of Johnson County. Marion was one of the counties included in this new county. The first settler to reside in Marion was J.H. White. He built a cabin on what is now Prairie View Road on his farm which he named White's Corners after himself and his wife Fannie Marbury White (1837-1914). The early residents of Marion were farmers who grew corn, wheat, beans, pumpkins and other vegetables. In addition to farming, some residents became miners or started businesses such as a bakery or a grocery store. By 1930 there were over 190 households residing in Marion County with an average population size of 7 people per household! The first post office was established in Marion on Valentine's Day 1872 by WmMills Jr., an employee of the Minnesota Central Railroad Company. From 1892 until 1945 it was called Valentine's Ford Post Office because it served as the terminus for mail coach traffic between Minneapolis and St Paul; at that time all mail stopped at Valentine's Ford! This small town experienced many changes during its history: It became a stop on the Chicago & Northwestern Railway when it extended its line through central Iowa; it lost its status as a center for cotton production when railroads diverted concentrate from Missouri Valley Fields to bigger mills near Des Moines; finally it regained importance when Interstate 80 bypassed it and took nearby Cedar Rapids instead! It wasn't until 1978 that President Jimmy Carter designated Valentine's Ford National Historical Park!
The city of Marion was founded in 1856 by Rev. Fenton Harlan and his wife, Mary. The first store in town was established on the corner of Seventh and State Streets. By 1860, there were six stores in Marion. In 1865, the town had a population of fifty-three residents and one grocery store. The first school in Marion was built in 1867 by Mrs. Hanks. In 1876, the city had a population of two hundred residents and a Methodist church. A new school building was erected on First Street in 1889 by Mrs .Jensen for the use of the city schools; it is now used as a library! In 1911, Marion became an incorporated city with a population of five hundred citizens! It has since grown to over one thousand people!
