Marion, Iowa is a town in Douglas County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sioux City, IA-KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Marion were James and Elizabeth Cooks who arrived in 1847. They founded the town on the site of an old mill settlement that had been abandoned due to flooding during a extreme thunderstorm two years earlier. The Cooks homestead was located on present day State Highway 144 south of town. In 1856, John Fenton purchased the land from the Cooks and developed it into a village named after him - Fentonville. In 1892, Marion became an independent municipality under supervision of Sioux City. On July 15, 1907, it merged with Sioux City to become one city with a combined population of over 50,000 people In 1951 the state legislature passed legislation providing for the establishment of central government within Douglas County and Marion was designated as its seat and continued to be so until 1959 when Sioux City took control again On January 1st 1978 Marion incorporated as a village once again In 2001 Pella annexed Marion which made Marion one of three towns (the other two being Spirit Lake and Grinnell) that formed Pella Township . On November 5th 2006 another annexation occurred when Parkersburg annexes nearby Clearwater Village making all four villages unofficially part of Pella Township
