In addition, Lafayette Armstrong (1811-1885), an early settler in Marion, named one of his children after General Morgan. The first post office was established in Marion on October 15, 1853; it served until December 8, 1861 due to population growth within that time frame. The city's first mayor was John Winton and it had five trustees: William Pritchett (1824-1902), Hyrum Pratt (1829-1920), Ebenezer Cobb (1838-1919), Moses Tuttle (1798-1868) and George Sibley (1800-1869). During World War I, Marion worked closely with numerous other communities across Iowa to contribute goods and services needed for military purposes including food production and ammunition storage facilities. After hostilities stopped in 1918, many residents returned home but some remained behinddue to lack of housing or other opportunities back then. In 1919–20 when Mayor Pritchett died suddenly, City Councilman Ebenezer Cobb assumed mayoral responsibilities until he won election two years later and continued serving until his death in 1922 at age 79 years old; this event remains significant today because it marked Iowa’s first elected African American mayor since Reconstruction era ended 72 years earlier! After World War II began with America’s entry into World War II on September 2nd 1941 local residents were mobilized through various patriotic organizations such as American Legion Committee #2 which solicited donations from citizens throughout their communities for war supplies such as gasoline ration cards which could only be used within their municipalities not outside them like before so they couldNOT use federal funds which would have been confiscated if used outside these walls however these card donations did go towards war related expenses like building airfields near our townships which we utilized during combat operations just like all other United States Military Sites worldwide
