Born in Marion, Iowa on May 17, 1871, Marion was the daughter of James and Sarah (Foley) Marion. The family moved to Des Moines in 1874 and settled on a farm at 316 West Second Street. James Marion developed a successful business importing machinery from Europe. In 1886 he married Emma Linton, the niece of his friend and fellow entrepreneur Wm. H. Linton. They had six children: Aiden, William H., Jr., MetaLinda, John F., and Sarah Jane (Marion). Over time the farm increased in size to encompass over two hundred acres and became an important part of the local community. From 1909 until her death in 1957 Mrs. Marion served as Mayor of Marion through three terms until she was succeeded by her son-in-law Harry Sieverding who held that office for four terms before retiring in 1977. In 1907 Mrs. Marion organized the first women's club in town which met monthly for one year before being disbanded due to lack of interest among its members; this is generally considered to be the start of women's professional organizations in townspeople' circles hereabouts! Mrs. Marion also founded the first agricultural fair hereabouts which was a great success every year until it was discontinued after one season due to budget limitations! She also served as president of several civic groups including those concerned with education, health care, housing development, and economic development; these were all important positions during her time as mayor! Marion died on November 10th, 1957 at age ninety-six after years of healthy living surrounded by her loved ones; she will always be remembered for her dedication to public service during an era when many women did not have access to such opportunities!
In 1846, the Iowa Territory was organized and Marion was selected as its capital. The city's first mayor, John W. Bogan, helped to create a successful municipal government that continues to this day. In 1852, the territorial legislature granted Marion city status and an ordinance became law designating it as the "City of Marion." In 1861, the United States Civil War began and Marion was one of several Iowa towns combatting Confederate forces. As a result of their efforts, many homes were destroyed in fighting but also saw rapid growth in population. By 1865, the population had reached 1001 residents and by 1870 it had topped 1,500 people. During this time period also occurred some significant events in Marion's history including becoming one of only two cities in Iowa to be declared a "dry" city when prohibition laws were repealed in 1902; seeing its first light blue car made; and being designated as a National Historical Park on September 14th, 1954.
