Marion, Iowa is a small town in the east-central portion of Iowa. The population was 5,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids– Des Moines metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1851 by General James Swayne and his wife Sarah Ann. The town originally consisted of only a few homes and a store. In 1883, Marion became the county seat for Butler County. In 1962, Marion voters passed a referendum to secede from Butler County and become an independent city. The city's first mayor was Jack Kline. In 1984, Marion voters passed another referendum to become an independent city again. This time, they voted to make their city sheriff instead of having one elected at-large like other cities in the area. On November 3, 2009, Marion residents voted to incorporate as a city with its own governing body separate from Cedar Rapids (the county seat). The incorporation process took several months because it needed approval from both the state and federal governments; however, on December 13th Mayor Jack Kline announced that incorporation had been approved by all three bodies and that he would assume office on January 1st 2010

In the early 1800s, Marion was a small town in Iowa. It was an agricultural town that depended on corn and other crops to survive. However, it soon became known as themodoc of Iowa because of the many Modoc Indians that lived there. In 1853, the United States government moved all of the Modoc Indians to Oklahoma so they could be killed. However, some managed to escape and live in nearby Kansas City until their death in 1887. As a result of this event, Marion became known as themodoc town because of its lack of Indian residents.
The first white settlement in Marion County was made in 1836 when David K. Brown and his family founded the town of Decorah. The town was named after General James K. Polk, who had been instrumental in helping create Iowa as a state in 1845. In 1865, the city of Des Moines was founded by Colonel George Catlin, who purchased 2,500 acres of land east of Marion for $1 per acre. The city was named after Catlin's hometown, Dublin, Ireland.
