The history of Multi-Tools in Marion, Iowa begins with the purchase of a tool box from James H. Martin in 1892. The first multi-tool was an old hatchet that was used to chop wood. It was purchased by John W. Kline and his son, Harry, in 1907. In 1915, the Klines opened the first tool store in Marion and soon became known for their quality tools and salesmanship. Marion, Iowa is a town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. Marion was founded in 1855 and named for General James K. Polk. The town was organized in 1879 and renamed for Marion H. Shields who served as mayor from 1899 to 1901 and again from 1915 to 1917. The first store on the present site of the city opened in 1880. In 1907, the city built its first school which still stands today. In 1933, there were 1,500 businesses in Marion employing over 60% of the workforce; however by 2009 that number had decreased to 612 businesses employing just over 20% of the workforce due to economic recession conditions throughout America at that time. In early 2009 a new library/ archives building was completed downtown which housed important local historical materials dating back to 1855 including newspapers from that year as well as photographs and other artifacts from that era which are now on display inside and around the building. Marion, Iowa is a small town in the US state of Iowa. It is located on the banks of the Missouri River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Des Moines and 25 miles (40 km) west of Omaha. The population was 9,812 at the 2000 census. The name Marion comes from nearby Mount Vernon Township and means "the mount." The first European to visit Marion was French trader Pierre Le Moyne in 1795. He named it after General George Washington's Regiment which had recently departed for France at the end of the Revolutionary War. A post office was established at Marion in 1810, and a store opened on Main Street in 1811. In 1816, two families bought land around what is now downtown Marion and began building a brick courthouse and schoolhouse. In 1840, Union troops burned down part of downtown Marion while retreating from an engagement with Confederate forces near Waterlootown. The town rebuilt quickly and by 1850 had a population of over 100 people. By 1860, there were also stores, churches, a jail, a court house and three schools in operation. During the Civil War (1861-1865), Marion sided with the Union side but did not battle until late into 1865 when Union forces attacked Confederate positions just north of town. This led to significant damage to buildings including one destroyed during the attack which remains as one of history's largest surviving demolitions in Iowa history. After Reconstruction ended following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1865, most African Americans left for states such as Texas or Arkansas where slavery continued legally even after emancipation; many white farmers followed them intoaband migration across America's deeply divided landscape. Many parts of eastern Iowa were still under Republican control until well into Reconstruction-era America when Democrat Franklin D Roosevelt became president following his victory over incumbent James K Cleland in 1944; he ordered federal housing projects to be built throughout eastern Iowa due to high levels of poverty among black residents living under Republican rule nationwide; these projects ultimately contributed to suburbanization across much rural American society during this time period
