That same year saw also the opening of First National Bank (), which became one of America's leading banks for many years (). In 1865–66, Garnet and John Connery organized a trunk line railroad through Polk County called the "Iowa Central Railway". This railway helped spur economic development throughout central Iowa during this time period (). In 1896–97, prohibition took hold throughout Iowa with many businesses closed due to tax laws passed at that time (). However,. several prominent business owners including A W Graves & Co., First National Bank (), and Garnet and John Connery re-opened their stores after prohibition ended (). After Prohibition ended in 1992 (due to Ulysses S Grant signing an executive order ending Prohibition), much of central Iowa resumed full production with few exceptions such as agriculture (which continued largely unchanged until 2006) or manufacturing (where significant changes occurred). Most recently there have been efforts underway within local government to revive certain aspects of downtown business activity such as restoring sidewalks and painting infrastructure; however these efforts have not yet borne fruit ()

In 1892, when Iowa became an independent state, Marion became its capital and adopted the name Des Moines City Limits. However, most residents continued to refer to themselves as "Marionites." In 1904, during a period of city-wide consolidation under new government rules, Marion withdrew from Des Moines City Limits and became its own municipality under the name "Marion." The economy of Marion has been based largely on agriculture since its founding; today its primary industry is cheese production. The town was once known for its quality hay products; however, recent years have seen growth in other industries such as manufacturing and retail parks services.
