Emma Hirsch is the editor of the Marion, Iowa Review. She has been writing about music and culture since she was old enough to hold a pencil. When I moved to Marion in fall 2008, it seemed like an interesting place to live. The population was only around 1,200 people, but there were plenty of places to go out and explore. I quickly became friends with many of the residents, and soon found myself working at the local grocery store as a cashier. It wasn’t anything I had ever wanted for myself before, but it did solve my food problem for a while. I started studying music at University of Northern Iowa (UNI) when I first moved to town. This was back in those days when there were no classes on music administration or production in town – you had to take coursework from UNI themselves! But even though I didn’t have any experience under my belt yet, I really enjoyed taking classes and trying out new techniques in composition and notation. Eventually, after years of hard work and dedication (and some great tunes courtesy of our students at UNI), I graduated with my degree in Music Education/Production last year. In addition to that diploma, which feels pretty amazing given everything that has happened since then…it also means that I now have an actual job! Which is always exciting! 🙂 Now that I’ve got this new knowledge under my belt – including howto produce records and tour – life seems much more manageable than it did when I first arrived hereabouts two years ago! And although things are still small-town-ish compared to larger towns all over America (especially Chicago), it feels like we’re constantly evolving into something new all the time 🙂

Marion, Iowa is the smallest of the five U.S. states and has a population of just over 7,000 people. The state was named for General David Dixon Marion, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Iowa. In 1905, Marion became the 11th state in America to be created from part of Dakota Territory when that territory was split between Minnesota and Nebraska. The first inhabitants of what is now Marion were Native Americans who migrated from east to west across the Great Lakes region during the late 18th century. They traded goods with settlers on both sides of the Missouri River and hunted big game such as buffalo and deer. By 1885, there were only a few scattered settler communities in what is now Marion County while most of present day Iowa was still part of Mexico Territory. In 1905, when General David Dixon Marion arrived in central Iowa to become its new governor, he decided to name his new state after himself. He had been born inMontgomery County, Alabama on November 12th, 1853 and had come to live in central Iowa following his service as an aide to President James K. Polk during the American Civil War (1861-1865). After leaving office at age 38 years old, he returned home and began ranching near Cedar Rapids until his death on May 15th, 1925 at age 85 years old. In response to Governor Marion's namesake state becoming a reality within days rather than weeks or months like many other States which came into being after war victories by commanders or treaties signed by Presidents Abraham Lincoln or Andrew Johnson – this event helped solidify Midwest identity opposite those regions where Kansas City’s growth was initially double that rate despite having less land area – historians have long debated how much impact General Dixon’s decision had on early development patterns for parts northeast Iowa including northwestern Illinois; southeastern Wisconsin; eastern Michigan; northwest Ohio; southwest Indiana; northeastern Kentucky; western Tennessee; southwestern North Carolina; northwestern South Carolina parameded their way northward along I-75 corridor paralleling then developing Atlantic Coast Railroad natural gas pipeline route deep into newly acquired land west of Interstate 40 since before white settlement even began hereabouts becoming known as “The Great Sioux Nation Land Rush” due primarilyto railroad interests seeking access not only for coal but also oil shale & gas deposits located offshore off Texas coast which would one day make up about 50%+ total reserves world wide estimates based on current drilling techniques
In 1851, the United States Census enumerated Marion as a town. The town was organized in 1857, and named for General James A. Marion, who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1907, the city of Ames was founded in north central Iowa by residents of Marion who were displaced by heavy flooding from the Missouri River during a winter rainstorm.
