In November of 1912, a company called the Iowa Central Coal and Coke Company (ICCC) was founded in Marion, Iowa. The ICCC was responsible for the production of coal and coke products from coal mines in Marion County. In 1916, the ICCC changed its name to United States Coal Corporation. In 1928, United States Coal Corporation merged with American Coal Corporation. This merger created the world’s first high capacity conversion plant. At United States Coal Corporation’s new plant in Marion, Iowa, coal could be converted into coking fuels at up to 2 million pounds per hour. This gave United States Coal corporation an advantage over their competition because they could produce more fuel at a lower cost per pound than their competitors. The first high capacity conversion plant did not come about easily though; it took many years of hard work and dedication by employees at United States Coal Corporation. Thanks to this plant, on May 1st, 1951 there were only 10 companies in the world that could convertcoal into coking fuels!

The town of Marion, Iowa, is located in the eastern part of the state of Iowa. The population of Marion was 2,611 at the 2010 census. The name Marion comes from a Sioux word meaning "happy hunting ground." In 1871, five men and one woman organized a farmstead in what is now Marion. They named it Bellefontaine after one of their pioneer families in nearby Bellevue. By 1880, there were 25 people living in Bellefontaine. In 1907, the community voted to change its name to Marion because it had been recommended by a group of school board members as being more appropriate for an agricultural community than Bellefontaine. The new name reflected the town's agricultural focus and growth over time. By 1930, there were 146 residents living in Marion. At that time, the textile industry dominated local development and many businesses operated out of service stations along State Highway 6A which ran through town. Today, only a few small businesses remain within the walls of old Bellefontaine while most residents commute to larger cities or towns outside of town for work purposes. Marion has experienced some major changes throughout its history including several fires that destroyed much property before finally dying out in 1965; however, overall things have remained relatively stable during these years despite erratic economic times which have caused many job losses and reductions in services available to residents such as health care and recreation opportunities due to budget cutsbacks. Today, citizens are proud to call themselves "Marionites" who celebrate their community's heritage each fall when parade participants walk down Main Street hand-in-hand with floats made from recycled materials donated by local businesses during October's parade season event dubbed "Festival Days". This year marks both 20 years since incorporation into the city limits - an accomplishment not easily accomplished within such tight confines - as well as 10 years since tornado damage restored some services back on line following a devastating storm which killed two people and injured dozens more just days later; making this year also quite special indeed!

The facility was built primarily for growing crops and raised chickens, but also served as a school and community center. In 1896, Marion was incorporated as a town. The population of Marion peaked at around 1,500 in 1920 before slowly declining over the next several decades. However, it has since re-emerged as an important community with a strong cultural presence.
