As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,907. The history of Marion goes back to 1847 when Territorial Governor James K. Polk set out from Independence, Missouri to explore new territory west of the Mississippi River. On his journey he passed through what is now Marion County, Indiana and named it for General John Fenton Marion who had commanded U.S. forces at Fort Dearborn in 1812-14 and also fought with General Andrew Jackson during the Mexican-American War. In 1848 a group of settlers led by Captain Amos Eaton established a farmstead on an unhealthy swamp near what is now Center City (Cedar Rapids). They built a log cabin and erected a crossroads nearby which they called "The Crossroads." In 1850 Captain Eaton's son Charles opened up a store here which became one of the most important in town. In 1861 Colonel William Halleck ordered all male citizens between 21 and 40 years old to register with him for military service in preparation for war with Mexico but few responded due to economic reasons (the Panic of 1865). When hostilities began on April 6th, 1861, many men registered without knowing what they were getting themselves into and soon found themselves drafted into Union army units or working as farmers’ subcontractors helping to feed Union troops across America while their families remained behind in enemy country. On November 3rd, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln issued Proclamation No 1 allowing freed slaves within Confederate lines free passage throughIowa towards freedom “provided they should come within this state Lines…and should not attempt or solicite admission into any other state” This proclamation allowed African Americans access not just to Iowa but also Nebraska Territory east of Omaha where they lived until 1862 when that territory was taken over by Dakota Territory under President Abraham Lincoln’s order creating North Dakota as well as parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin including Kinnickinnic Lake where Marion stands today.
