Marion, Iowa is a small town located on the Des Moines River in northwest Iowa. The population was 1,671 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids-Des Moines-West Des Moines metropolitan area. The first settlers in Marion were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1797. They constructed a farmstead on the present site of Marion in 1827. The name Marion was given to the community by General David Dixon, who named it for his daughter, Martha (1796-1861). The town was incorporated as a village in 1893. In January 2009, Barack Obama made history when he became the first U.S. president to visit Marion since World War II and deliver a speech at the high school gymnasium. In that speech, Obama praised America's progress during his time in office and warned against future economic challenges. He also called for stronger gun control laws and more investment into renewable energy sources
Gun swivels have a long and varied history. They were first developed in 1811 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte, an Italian gunsmith. In 1892, George W. Browning patented the now famous Browning Automatic Pistol, which featured a pivoting barrel that allowed the user to rotate the weapon around its axis of rotation. The use of these devices increased firepower for infantry and cavalry alike, making them indispensible in war. In 1949, U.S. Patent No. 4,828,521 was issued to John Fenton for the development of a rotatable barrel rifle using a system of linkage between the barrel and stock that permitted vertical or horizontal movement of the rifle's armature (stock). This invention led to the development of modern rifles such as the AK-47 series and .308 calibers respectively. In 1856, when Iowa Territory was created, the state of Iowa only had a population of about 10,000 people. The Territory consisted of present-day Iowa and Nebraska. The first governor of the new territory was John A. Kirkpatrick. He appointed George Catlett as its first justice of the peace and Daniel Boone to be its first postmaster general. The Territory experienced some growth during its early years, but it remained small in comparison to other states in the United States at that time. In 1857, the Territorial Legislature passed a bill authorizing the erection of a telegraph line from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Cedar Rapids, Minnesota. This action helped stimulate local economic development and helped increase trade with other states. On July 1, 1858, Governor Kirkpatrick issued an order appointing James Fenton as Territorial Treasurer for the Territory until someone could be found to fill the position permanently. On December 3rd, 1861, Governor Kirkpatrick announced that he would not be re-appointed to his position because he had become ill and would no longer serve on occassionally scheduled government business. He is considered one of the founders of Des Moines County Museum in Des Moines, IA! In 1865 Congress passed legislation creating Kansas City County within Iowa Territory which included parts of Cedar Rapids and Marion County; these areas were eventually annexed by Kansas City County in 1907.See: "History Of Kansas City County" by Don Ewing. In 1847, the town of Marion was founded by John W. Carleton and James McLaughlin. It was named in honor of Marion County, Iowa's first governor, whose body lay in state at the county courthouse until 1850. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s due to its location near a wagon route connecting Missouri and Illinois. By 1851, there were twenty-four businesses and two schools in Marion. The railroad arrived in Marion in 1856 and the town became a bedroom community for the larger cities along the line. In 1916, World War I began and many soldiers from Marion enlisted to fight overseas; this created an opportunity for the town to become known as "TheBirthplace of American Military Power." The war ended with victory for America and many of Marion's residents returned home.
