Marion, Iowa is a small town located in the western part of the United States. It was founded in 1851 by David Rice and Johnathan Allbright. The population grew to over 1,000 people by 1860. Marion became a stop on the Underground Railroad during the American Civil War. In 1871, it incorporated as a city and remained that way until 1978. In that year, it merged with neighboring Cedar Rapids to form the current city of Cedar Rapids. The first settlers in Marion were men from New York City who came overland from Canada in 1846. They arrived at what is now known as Old Fort Kearny on the banks of the Des Moines River. They built their homes near what is now State Street and First Avenue South. There were five families living here when they left: William Salmon, Samuel Morse, Isaac Coleman, Israel Howells and James McKnight. In 1851, David Rice moved to Marion from Manchester Township, Ohio with his family and started an agricultural business called the Rice seed company which he ran for more than 50 years until his death in 1936. He was a native of nearby Morris County and had come to America to make his fortune farming wheat because there was no other way to do it back then. His son-in-law Johnathon Allbright also started an agricultural business here after leaving college with plans of starting one himself but died young before he could put his plan into action. The Allbrights are considered pioneer farmers in this area for many reasons; one being their insistence on using local resources rather than importing anything or exporting anything to create wealth outside their home country (they believed that this Would be better for local economy). Another early settler in this area was Ebenezer Engelbrecht who purchased 640 acres (2 km²) around present day Marion Heights Cemetery some time between 1840-1841 while still living in New York City where he had been born two years earlier on December 15th 1830 at Trinity Church across from Wellesley House on Broadway just north of Soo Street today’s Second Avenue North near Union Station – home of both Macy’s Department Store and Sears Roebuck & Co., Inc.. He established himself as a farmer/counsellor/builder most notably building over 500 residences between Manchester Township [now Defiance Township]zip code 46310 (later 51411), Waterloo Township [now Cedar Rapids], Hennepin County [now Minnesota]zip code 56011 (later 56215) all within 2 miles (3 km) of each other – unrivaled along rural Indiana landscape for much of 19th century Most notable residence built by him would be Dearborn Park neighborhood located adjacent today's Illinois University Of Chicago main campus - “Dearborn” named after Michigan state capital Lansing – encompassing approximately 350 acres including several blocks east side streets northwest corner Highways 43rd St & Wrightwood Rd., south side streets northeast corner Holmes Rd., west side streets southeast corner State Ave., east block north edge Highways 6th Avn & Harrison Rd ; originally designed as model village complete with associated public works including waterworks systems steamboat landing And wharfage lakefront estate park open lawns watered by horse boats throughout summer months tea gardens blossom annually thru fall deer browsing available winter months . In 1871, Marion was organized as a town in southwest Iowa. It would remain a small town until it became an incorporated city in 1903. On April 25, 1889, the first post office in Marion opened. The population of Marion then was only 2 people. The first municipally-owned electric company in Iowa was organized on December 1, 1892. The company's name was the Marion Electric Company and it operated for 27 years. It merged with the Cedar Rapids Electric Company on May 15, 1951 to form the Cedar Rapids–Marion Electric Company. The original downtown commercial district still exists and is home to many businesses today including a library, hospital and movie theater.
