During World War I, Marion played an important role in supplying munitions to America's war effort and participated in various activities such as fundraising drives and local defense patrols. The population of Marion declined during the 1920s but recovered by 1930 because of new industry founded within walking distance of the city limits such as meatpacking plants and paper mills. However, with increased competition from adjacent cities during World War II, Marion lost its prominence as a manufacturing center until it regained some level of popularity following passage of Iowa's State Fair Act in 1951 which spurred development within walking distance of the fairgrounds
