Marion, Iowa is a town in Dodge County, Iowa, United States. The population was 681 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1875. The town has grown since then and now has a population of over 1,000 people. Marion is located at (41.047914, -93.860912). According to the 2010 census, it has a total area of , of which is land and (1.3%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 553 people, 183 households, and 133 families residing in the town. The population density was 14 people per square mile (5/km²). There were 208 housing units at an average density of 7 per square mile (2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% White and 2% African American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0%. There are three churches in Marion: First Baptist Church with 495 members; Presbyterian Church with 93 members; and Evangelical Lutheran Church with 350 members
Marion was founded in 1854 by John and Anna (Goudreau) Marion. The town was named for Anna's late mother, Marion County being located in the same location as the original land grant. The first post office was established in 1855, and the first store opened in 1860. In 1870, a schoolhouse and church were built, followed by a general store in 1872. By 1900, there were six businesses total with a population of around 100 people. A local railroad arrived in 1911 and connected Marion to Cedar Rapids via railroads both ways making it easier to get goods to market. In 1916, the first high school was built, followed by a junior high school in 1922. By 1935, there were ten businesses with a population of over 500 people and two schools. In 1951-1952 the county auditorium/hall was built which served as the county courthouse until it burned down on November 8th of that year; however, due to its importance within Marion history it has been rebuilt multiple times since then including most recently in 2016 following an extensive renovation project costing $34 million dollars
