In 1851, when the first gunnery school in Iowa was founded at Fort Dodge, Marion was part of that establishment. The first residents of what is now Marion were farmers and their families who cultivated land on the south side of the Des Moines River. They raised corn, wheat, and other cereal crops and slaughtered cattle and sheep for meat. As farming became less common, some people turned to Manufacturing in order to stay afloat during hard times. In 1867 a mill was built on the east bank of the river opposite where present day State Capitol building stands. The mills produced flour, cloth, shoes, wagon parts and hats. A blacksmith shop also operated in Marion until 1888 when a new blacksmith shop was built on First Street in downtown Marion by Wm Hitesmith & Sons. The city of Marion experienced rapid growth starting around 1870 due to its location along the Des Moines River between two major transportation arteries; railroads and roads. By 1890 there were over 100 businesses located within walking distance of downtown which included several stores that had multiple locations throughout town including one on Second Street near today’s Courthouse Square. There were also two hotels: The Hotel Greene (now known as the Mid-America Motel) at 12th and Jefferson Streets NW which opened in 1875; and The Masonic Temple at 2nd and Market Streets NW which opened in 1880). As Main Street grew more crowded with business owners seeking space inside or outside downtown buildings notices appeared warning customers aboutgunshot residue being left on clothing from recent shootings nearby.
