Marion, Iowa is a small town in north-central Iowa that was founded by Mormons in 1847. The population of Marion was 1,853 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids–Omaha metropolitan area. The town was named after Josephine Marbury, wife of John Marbury, one of the United States’ founders. The first post office in Marion opened on January 3, 1848. The town had a population of just over 100 when sweltering summer temperatures caused many residents to flee for the winter; however, the following spring saw an influx of new settlers as a result of railroads coming through and agricultural improvement opportunities in the area. One early resident, David Witherspoon, served as mayor from 1857 to 1861 and again from 1865 to 1867. One other notable resident during this time period was Ezra Taft Benson who served as president of Brigham Young University from 1888 until his death in 1902. In addition to its namesake (Josephine Marbury) and early pioneer inhabitants (), Marion also experienced significant growth due to nearby locations such as Cedar Rapids, Ames, and Sioux City which all became major cities during this time period. The community continued to grow throughout the late 1800s into the 20th century with increased access to education and jobs available thanks to advancements in transportation and communication technology; consequently making Marion one of most rapidly growing communities during that time frame. In recent years there has been some revitalization efforts taking place including development of new businesses and residences within the town limits while also increasing tourism visitation for bothlocal history buffs as well as those visiting Cedar Rapids or Omaha for business purposes
In 1868, the Iowa Territory was organized and Marion was named as the capital. The city's first mayor was A.B. Peake and its first recorder was Fenton Waddington. In 1916, Marion became a town and in 1961 it became a city.
