In 1892, a company named Winchester Ammunition was founded in Marion, Iowa by George W. Winchester and his brother Samuel. The company became one of the most successful in America and produced ammunition for both handguns and rifles. In 1931, Winchester Ammunition merged with Remington Arms to form Remington-Winchester Corporation. That same year, the first factory ship of the new M1 carbine was built at the Marion plant. This rifle became known as the world’s most reliable firearm and remains so today. Over time, many other companies have joined Remington-Winchester Corporation including Hornady Ammunition, Federal Ammunition Company and Browning Firearms Company. Today, Winchester Ammunition is a major producer of ammunition worldwide with operations located in more than 60 countries.

Manufacturing has declined significantly since 2000; however there are still some small businesses in Marion that provide employment for local residents. In recent years there have been efforts made by local residents to revitalize downtown Marion into something more contemporary with restaurants, retailers, art galleries etcetera. However much remains undone despite almost twenty years of effort by both the city government and private enterprise owners/ operators who have pledged financial assistance through civic engagement programs such as MARION COUNCIL which provides marketing & promotional materials free of charge; event sponsorship opportunities; land donations/ gifts from individuals or businesses;Professional Development Grant program - $10K every 2 years - distributed through individual business owners so that Striped Fences can employ hens & chicks year-round instead of just during egg-laying season

Marion, Iowa was founded in 1855 by the Ladd family. The town originally consisted of a few log homes and a store. In 1870, Marion became the county seat of La Salle County. It grew rapidly during the late 19th century thanks to its location on the Mississippi River and its easy access to transportation. The town's growth stalled after World War I, but it resumed growth in the 1920s when railroads arrived in Marion. Today, Marion is a community of about 15,000 people located on the bank of the Des Moines River between Ames and Decorah. The history of Marion begins with two families who moved from Illinois to Iowa in 1855. Isaac Ladd and his wife Anna were instrumental in helpingEDT build one of America's first iron locomotives - named "Marion" after their home state - at an early stage in railroad development. Early residents built their homes around what is now Main Street (then called Atlantic Avenue). By 1870, there were already over 100 residents living in Marion when it was chosen as county seat for La Salle County. The growing population required more space, so some new homes were built on either side of Main Street until 1907 when a new courthouse was completed on what is now State Capitol Drive (later renamed State Street). In 1925, railway companies began making connections between east-central Iowa and Des Moines using new tracks northeast of Marion via Union Pacific Railroad's main line from Omaha to Springfield. This connection made Marion one of the most important cities near Des Moines for business commuters heading south for work or north for shopping. By 1930, there were over 1,500 businesses operating in Marion with nearly $5 million worth of sales occurring annually! During World War II many jobs went abroad due to rationing policies that impacted all industries; however, within weeks after Pearl Harbor attacks American munitions manufacturers had started rebuilding their plants across the country which included opening branches into eastern Iowa including Marion where war production continued despite tight restrictions placed upon steel industry output nationally.. This rebuild helped continue Morrisons' long tradition as one of America's leading munitions producers dating back to WWI! Many local veterans returned home during this time such as Pfc Forrest Martin who served with Company K1/2 111th Infantry RegimentIowa National Guard during WWII while stationed at Camp Randall near present day Ames University; he later received Congressional Gold Medal posthumously recognizing his service
In 1847, a group of Methodist pastors, led by Rev. James Fenton, established the first Methodist church in Marion. The first pastor was Mr. Hildebrandt and the congregation had nine members. In 1851, Rev. John Mapes arrived to start his own church and the population of Marion exploded with people coming to worship God. In 1865, a school was built for the children of farmers in town and in 1875 a movie theater opened up which quickly became popular among the citizens. In 1905, the Marion Electric Railway was built which made traveling around town much easier and also brought many new residents into town. Today there are many businesses in town including banks, restaurants, stores, and more!
