The people of Marion were so upset with the French for burning down their building that they decided to change their name to Marion after General Washington's hometown. There are also a few small shops and restaurants scattered throughout the downtown area. The biggest attraction hereabouts is undoubtedly its beautiful greenfield countryside which offers plenty of hiking and biking opportunities as well as some interesting historical sites such as Fort Snelling National Historic Site and Pottawatomie Mission House.

In honor of its history and importance, we explore some of the key moments from this historic community’s story. In 1846, when Iowa became a state, it was located in what is now Missouri. The area that would become Marion consisted of several small villages scattered along the banks of the Arkansas River. These communities were founded by farmers who drove their cattle through this region for supplies and transportation. The first permanent settler in Marion was James Aiken. He arrived in 1851 and started trading goods with Native Americans and selling land to settlers. Over time, other entrepreneurs followed suit and began building homes, businesses, orchard trees, churches, schools – anything that could help make life easier for their families. By 1865, there were over 100 residents living in Marion! The years following World War II were difficult for rural America due to economic factors such as population growth rates (which outpaced technological advancement), changing priorities among government officials regarding funding sources (taxation shifted from agriculture towards industry), and increased competition from urban centers abroad. However, throughout these tough times Marion persevered; through hard work and ingenuity they turned around their fortunes within a few short years! Today's Marion is one of America’s great success stories – thanks in part to Davenport’s aggressive development program that has helped create more than 1 million jobs across multiple industries since 2002! Davenport continues to be one of America’s most innovative cities – supporting numerous cultural institutions while creating thousands of new homes statewide!
The first American settlers in Marion, Iowa were the Hennepin brothers. In 1854, John Hennepin and his brother Nicholas arrived in what is now Marion County. The brothers began farming and started a sawmill. They also developed a small town called Pella on the banks of the Des Moines River. In 1865, the Hennepin brothers sold their share of Pella to James Whetstone and his wife Margaret. Whetstone renamed the town Marion after himself and his wife. The town's original residents included members of the Presbyterian church, who founded a school there in 1866. In 1912, Clarence Schieffer purchased land east of Pella from James Whetstone for $5,000. Schieffer developed that land into what is now known as downtown Marion. He built several churches in downtown Marion and opened a grocery store there in 1914. The city's first library was opened in 1916 by Mrs. Lillian Bemis-Wright with funds she donated to her charity, Ladies Auxiliary for Social Services (LASS). That same year, the city council designated downtown Marion as its official business district Downtown Marion has been home to several restaurants since its founding including Red Lobster,, Grille'n', Rueben's Bindy BBQ Greek Sandwich Shop., Tommy's Tavern., and Uncle Louie's Italian Restaurant
