The Keokuk-Cedar Rapids oilfield was one of the most productive in the nation during World War II and has continued to produce oil since then. The first permanent settlers in what is now Keokuk County were two families from Holland who named their land "Keeokeek." One family owned about three hundred acres of land that includes present-day Keokuk and Cedar Rapids. They built a log cabin on their property which still stands today. In 1827, another group of Germans arrived in this area and named their land "Dunnemarsh." They also built a log cabin on their property which still stands today. In 1845, James Whetstone purchased some 160 acres (72 hectares) of land from Eli Brown for $6000 dollars. This became known as Whetstone Prairie due to its central location within the county boundaries at that time. In 1851, John Fenton bought 60 acres (24 hectares) from Elisha Farnsworth for $4000 dollars which became known as Fenton Prairie because it lay between Pella and Cedar Rapids on the north side of Davenport Creek and south side of US 20/29/336 near present-day Waterloo. By 1860, about 375 residents lived in what is now Keokuk County with 68% being farmers and 32% being laborers or servants who worked for local landowners or companies such as those around Davenport Creek or US 20/29/336). A few years earlier than this there had been an Act passed by Congress entitled An Act To Encourage Settlers In The Territory Of Iowa Andadjacent thereto To Come Forward And Apply For Land Which They Saw As Most Appropriate For Them And Which Was Located In What Is Now The State Of Iowa….This act provided for bounties of money up to $25 per acre (9USD) awarded to any settler who found 640 acres (240 hectares) within five years….Most people coming into this area were farmers so there was no need for such large bounties given that heath had already become established by then….. By 1870 less than 10% of the population living here were farming while more than 90% consisted either oflaborers or servants working either with local landowners or with railroads transportation services……….. By 1880 only 3%ofthe total population living here were farmers while almost 95% consisted eitherofLaborersorServantsworkingeitherwithlocallandlordsorwithrailroads Transportationservices………The last major influx here came after World War I when many Americans moved westward looking for jobs…….. After World War I ended many people decided to stay in centralIowa because they felt it would be harder economically back east….. Today there are over 5500 residents living in Keokuk County who come from all over America including countries such as Germany, Japan, Italy etc………… apart from agriculture there are many other businesses and industries currently operating in town including health care facilitiesites like Walgreens Pharmacy & Wellness Center; Service Station #2; Medical Supply Store; KFC restaurant; Auto Parts store; Burger King fast food restaurant; Home Depot store………….........
The town of Keokuk, Iowa was founded in 1854 by James C. Keokuk and his family. The town originally consisted of just a couple of farms and a post office. In the 1860s, the area around Keokuk began to grow as a result of the development of railroads. By 1870, Keokuk had become an important railway junction in central Iowa. The town continued to grow throughout the 1800s and into the 1900s, thanks to its location near several major railways. In 1907, Keokuk became the capital city of Iowa when it was created from parts of Des Moines and Waterloo.
