Keokuk, Iowa is a small town in south-central Iowa. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Keokuk County and the entrant city in the nearby city of Dubuque. The name "Keokuk" means "peaceful place." The first European to visit what is now Keokuk County was French trader Jean Nicolet in 1638. He named it for his home town of La Rochelle, France. In 1836, John Cavanaugh built a mill on the confluence of the Big Sioux and Little Sioux rivers in present-day Keokuk County. The dam that created Lake McDonald near present-day Dubuque was erected around this time. A post office called Keokuk was established in 1855, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. A new post office called Dubuque was established on January 1, 1907, and continued operations until it also ceased operations on July 5, 1951. In 1916, Harry Sibley set up an all-purpose flour mill here which became one of the largest flour mills west of the Mississippi River. Sibley's Mill went out of business in 1922 but later reopened as an All-Purpose Flour Mill under new ownership before closing again in 1969.
