After the war ended, many businesses closed down due to competition from nearby neighboring cities with similar economic indices. However, keokuks perseverance led to rebirth during downtown revitalization projects that took place during the late 1990s and 2000s; this resulted in increased commerce and job creation within the city limits since then. Finally edges have started unraveling once again following harsh winter weather which has caused some decreases in business activity throughout 2017/2018

The first school was built in1851, and the first church was built in 1856. In 1865, Keokuk became a county seat of Polk County. In 1907, Keokuk became a city.
