The name "Keokuk" originated with Captain Fetterman's discovery of a small creek called "Kecookee" near present-day downtown Keokuk. He named it after his birthplace Kiel, Sweden and postulated that this place had once been known as Kookee or Kochia (the latter being an alternate spelling of Kecock) which means 'green place'. From this location, farmers could cultivate corn and wheat while goods brought downriver were unloaded at the wharf on the river's edge and transported across town by wagon or train to market. A ferry landing existed at present-day downtown Keokuks Ferry Landing before railroads came along and replaced ferries as transportation options for goods moving between Keokuk and other parts of Iowa during the early 19th century. In 1851, following boundary changes made in Iowa due to western Illinois annexation into Iowa Territory, Polk County became part of new Howard County within Iowa Territory. As a result of this merger, much older settlements such as Waterloo (now Cedar Rapids), Ankeny (now Dodge City), Council Bluffs (now Omaha), Indianola (now gdansk), Westville (now Sioux City) all lost their status as county seats; however, these towns continued to be incorporated into Howard County until 1907 when they were reincorporated into Keokuk Township effective July 1st! On October 15th, 1907 residents voted 3–0 in favor of annexing neighboring Cedar Rapids Township so that its citizens could have easier access to commerce withinHoward County! In 1865, the Cedar Rapids & Omaha Railway was established, which connected Cedar Rapids with Omaha. The towns were combined into one municipality in 1907. The first person to ever settle in Keokuk was James Wickersham. He arrived in 1844 from Maine and started a ferry service between Cedar Rapids and Keokuk. Wickersham's Ferry became one of the most popular tourist destinations in the town during its early years. His business failed soon after he moved to Keokuk, but his legacy can still be seen today on Main Street where he operated a grocery store from 1852 until his death in 1915. Other early settlers include Isaac Morse (1820-1892), who settled near what is now downtown Keokuk; John Fenton (1827-1904), who platted what is now North Park Place; Charles Hennesy (1850-1937), who founded an agricultural cooperative called the Gopher Mines; David Sloan (1798-1851), who built a sawmill on South Water Street; and Daniel Webster (1785-1847). These men laid the groundwork for what would becomeKeOKUK’s thriving commercial community by establishing stores, churches, schools, mills and other businesses that thrived until well into the 21st century. During World War I, many ofKeOKUK’s residents joined forces with their counterparts at neighboring Ames to form “The Great American Defense League” or “GANDL” for short. This effort helped buy supplies for army units fighting overseas while also raising money for local charitable efforts such as building487 homes for destitute veterans within three months of its creation on November 15th 1916! After World War II ended, many people chose to move back toKeOKUK because they found new opportunities available there following Decatur County’s incorporation as a new county within Iowa on January 1st 1947!
