Keokuk is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 14,658 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. The town was founded in 1854 and became an organized municipality on December 1, 1907. The first Europeans to visit this area were French traders who camped near the confluence of the Des Moines and Ottawa Rivers in 1792. In 1886 Ezra Strouds arrived with his wife Fannie and their three children from Illinois to start a flour mill on First Street west of Main Avenue (now Third Street) in what is now downtownKeokukHe started out making lard but soon found that he could not compete with local mills owned by men such as Samuel Morse & Co., John Pemberton & Sons or Lucius Quesnay & Sons who had larger facilities with more efficient machinery. Ezra set up his mill on White Street south of Main Avenue where it still stands today producing flour until 1938 when it was sold to Central Millinery Company for $2 million dollars ($ ). The building currently used as the municipal hall was completed in 1906 and has been used by various government agencies including the City Council since then! Sears / Roebuck & Co.'s closure left a lasting legacy on downtown with several prominent buildings remaining including the original Post Office building constructed1886-87 by Wm Henson Cope with later alterations by Ebenezer Townsend & Sons; State Capitol Building built 1911 by Franklin D Roosevelt; First National Bank building erected 1914; Union Pacific Railroad Depot/Railroad Museum complex built circa 1920-21 under direction of George Pulliam who played a significant role in erection of these architecture features popularly known as "Ppulliam's Promenade". The former millrace near downtown has been converted into a pedestrian mall called Grand Plaza which offers shopping opportunities as well as areas for dining out or performing arts events like live music concerts or plays outdoors throughout the summer months
