In 1865, local resident James O'Brien founded an agricultural colony nearpresent-dayKeOKukaustown with sixteen families who began farming corn and beans on 640 acres (2 km²). They named their settlement "O'Brien's Colony" after James O’Brien himself. After several years of success, they disbanded their colony in 1868 because of lack of resources and competition from other settlers within Iowa for land near Sioux City and Chicago . A post office called "Keoko" was established at this point in 1870; it continued operating until 1907 . In 1908, pioneer farmers Fenton Hobbs and Addison Halls developed a large dairy farm northeast ofpresent-dayKeOKukaustown which became one of Iowa's most successful smallholders . During World War II, KeokUK played host to much military activity as it served as both an airfield (1941–1945) and naval base (1942–1945).
