Keokuk is a city in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 21,521 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1854 by Captain James K. Polk and his wife Maria Lubbock Polk as the town of Keokuk on the banks of the Des Moines River. It became a city in 1907. The original name for Keokuk (Ki-woo), meaning "the place where water flows abundantly" was changed to Keokuk in honor of General James K. Polk's daughter Maria Lubbock Polk who had married him there in 1853. After his death, she donated land to make the town an incorporated municipality and it received its current name on December 3, 1907 due to its proximity to Des Moines and other cities with similar namesakes across Iowa. The City of Keokuk is located in eastern Polk County on I-80 south of downtown Des Moines and just east of US Highway 52 which leads north into Iowa City. According to the 2010 census, Keokuk has a total area of , all land. As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 16,827 people, 6,746 households, and 4,959 families residing in the city limits; however,[3] according to 2008 estimates from the US Census Bureau,[4] there are now over 25 thousand residents living within Kokuchee Creek watershed because much development has taken place since then within that territory – including residential developments adjacent to property owned by Wabash Electric Cooperative Company (WEA) – amounting today to .[5][6] As such [7], Kuo-koo's population has more than doubled since 2000 while Kokuchee Creek's population only increased by 2%.[8] In contrast with most American cities which have seen steady growth over time despite massive suburban expansion within their boundaries,[9][10][11], Keokuk experienced significant housing subdivisions along Kokuchee Creek beginning around 1990s when developers began planting new homes near schools and other transportation hubs like airports; many dwellings still remain today throughout much of this boundary: along what is now Peaked Road between Second Street West/Old State Road 947 South/Highway 515 East and Indianola Avenue Northwest; along Blue Lake Boulevard Southwest between Fourth Street Northwest/Old State Road 747 North/US Highway 220 East; near Wexford Elementary School Northeast corner First Street Southeast/Route 191 North; also northeast corner Third Street Southeast/Route 281 North (capitalized for convenience);[12][13][14][15][16] these areas have been increasingly developed as well as annexed into existing suburbs outside those borders or newly created neighborhoods inside those borders after being annexed by Kokuchee Creek largely through annexation resolutions passed by Township trustees during recent years following public hearings that focused on concerns about sprawl and air quality within formerly agricultural communities surrounding Kokuchae Creek watersheds.[17][18]
