Keokuk, Iowa is a city in Iowa that is located on the Mississippi River. The population was 48,691 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1847 and became a municipally-administered town in 1855. It has since been consolidated into the City of Keokuk. The history of Keokuk can be traced back to 1847 when it was founded by James Kapp and his family as a small village on the banks of the Mississippi River. The first African American to reside in Keokuk was Fannie Bogan who arrived in 1850. In 1861, John A. Campbell came to Keokuk from Illinois and began to promote land sales within the community. He also helped found the Republican Party in Iowa and served as its chairman from 1862 until 1865. By 1870, over 60% ofKeokuk's residents were white while only 8% were black In 1905, KeokUK adopted its current name of City of Keokuk after it merged with neighboring Towns of Linn and Quinton which had all been established as municipally-administered towns prior to that date. In 1960, following passage of the Civil Rights Actof 1964, then Mayor Harry Buehler announced plans for racial integration within local government at a public meeting attended by many local dignitaries including Governor Phil Hartman Since then (1968), affirmative action programs have been conducted through various municipal offices such as housing management and education while efforts are underway to attract businesses and jobs within urban areas throughout central Iowa

Keokuk is a town in Iowa, United States. The population was 5,895 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kendall County. The first Europeans to visit Keokuk were French traders and missionaries in the early 18th century. In 1837, Native Americans led by Chief Sacagawea destroyed a fur trader's trading post and settlement near present-day Keokuk. The Siouan-speaking people who had lived there before that time also left behind their language and culture when they migrated westward during the 1830s and 1840s. The city of Keokuk was founded in 1854 by members of the Methodist Episcopal Church as a college town for young women students attending Iowa State University (later UI). When that university closed in 1870, Keokuk became an important manufacturing center for cotton textiles, shoes, chemicals, and other products. Steel production began in the early 20th century; Keokuk has been called "the steel capital of America." The city's mills produced locomotives, automobiles, ships, trucks, bridges and other heavy equipment until they closed in the 1970s. Today most of those facilities are used for storage orchards or agricultural purposes. In 1976 Keokuk voters passed a resolution calling for creation of an urban area within the limits of the existing city so that more people could be housed close to work opportunities and services available within walking distance from their homes. That region now includes much of north Kendall County as well as portions of south Waterloo County
Keokuk was founded in 1854 by John Keokuk and his wife, Julia. The town was named for the Kreek Creek that ran through it. In 1872, Keokuk became a city and was renamed to Cedar Rapids. In 1907, Cedar Rapids became the capital of Iowa.
