In the early 1800s, Keokuk was a small town in Iowa. It had a population of only around 1,000 people at the time and there were no guns. However, because it was an agricultural community, guns were necessary for farmers to protect their crops from animals. In 1819, one of Keokuk's merchants, Isaac Griggs, developed a way to fire arrows without having to pull a bow. He invented the griffin bow and created the first successful slingshot in 1825. From this invention, Griggs became known as the father of modern rifle shooting. Despite its lack of gun prevalence in Keokuk during its early years, gun slings history can be found here. For example, in 1849-1850 there was an effort by two local businessmen to make a sling that could be fired with either hand. The resulting design is now known as the "Keokuk Rifle," and it remains one of the most popular rifles in American history. Keokuk is a town in Muscatine County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,590 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–Fort Dodge Metropolitan Statistical Area. Keokuk was founded in 1854 as a settlement on the east bank of the Kaskaskia River by fur traders and settlers from Michigan. The first post office in Keokuk was established in 1857. The name means "place where children play." In 1865, Keokuk became an incorporated town under state law. By 1870, the town had become home to about 500 people. In 1884, the Union Pacific Railroad built a railroad through Keokuk and other towns in Muscatine County. This made Keokuk one of the first communities to have telephone service and led to its growth as a commercial center for trade with surrounding counties. In 1912, Interstate 80 crossed over the Kaskaskia River just south of Keokuk and quickly brought new businesses and residents into town; this helped spur development around downtown (then known as "the Main Streetティーン") and along US 22/27 (now US 6). In 1919, when Des Moines metropolitan area came into being, Keokuk became part of it. Since then it has experienced steady growthk with annexations from other municipalities including West Des Moines and Clivetowns within Des Moines proper-all while maintaining its own identity as a vibrant small town filled with local artisans and farmers who continue to support their community through economic development initiatives

In 1872, granite quarries were opened near Keokuk and soon brickyards and other businesses sprang up to take advantage of the new found industry. By 1907, Keokuk had become an important transportation hub for sandstone mining operations around the state; its location made it an ideal place to store goods during long winters. During World War II, Keokuk played a critical role as a military base for training American troops; its proximity to Sandia National Laboratories made it an ideal location for testing weapons and munitions. After the war ended, many businesses closed but the granite quarries continued operation until they closed in 1984. Today, tourism remains a majorstay for Keokuka residents; visits are typically enjoyed during Holy Week and Christmas Season
