Keokuk is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 20,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. Keokuk was founded in 1854 by General James K. Polk and named for his native state of Iowa. The Keokuk Manufacturing Company was founded in 1873 and produces farm machinery, tractors, feed mills, agricultural equipment and other products. In 1916 the company became part of International Harvester Corporation. In 1984-1985 the Keokuk Area Chamber of Commerce created an arts center which now includes a large performing arts wing with rehearsal studios and performance spaces for local theater groups as well as art galleries exhibiting American Indian art from around the world. In 2000, TNT Broadcasting began operations in Keokuk with transmitters located at two sites: one on State Street between First Avenue and Broadway Streets (the original location) and another on Cedar Street between Fourth Avenue and Eighth Street (the second location). The television station has been available to viewers throughout central Iowa since its launch on October 1, 2000. As part of its newsgathering mission, KTNT broadcasts live coverage of all important events that occur within eastern Polk County including those affecting rural areas to the north or east. That year also saw the first ever air show staged at US Cellular Stadium which featured local high school teams from Keokuk against visiting Topeka Jayhawks football players from Wichita Falls Texas

Keokuk is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 24,629 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Keokuk County. The first permanent settler in present-day Keokuk was John Cook in 1827. Cook and his wife were among the earliest white settlers in what would later become Keokuk County. In 1836, Captain James Kapp and his party of three men founded the town of Kappville on a bluff overlooking the then current site of Keokuk. At that time, Kappville was one of only two towns located within present-day Keokuk County. In 1847, Jacob Thornburgh arrived from New York with his family and set up a farm near what is now downtown Keokuk. Thornburgh became an early leader in local politics and helped to create key institutions such as theKeokuk courthouse and jail. He also played an important role in developing keoghurstown – today’s downtown area – which began to take form around this time. One of Thornburgh’s descendants, Drury Hays Sr., served as mayor of Keoghurstown from 1951 to 1957 and 1959 to 1961; he also served as secretary of state from 1967 to 1971 under Governor Robert Dole. One street in downtownKeohurstown is named for him – Hays Street (later renamed Roberts Street). By 1860, there were more than 100 residents living in present-day Keoouk City alone; by 1870, that number had grown to over 250 people! By 1900, there were over 500 people living in KEOKUK COUNTY! Over 1/3 OF THE CITIZENS OF IOWA LIVE IN KEOKUK COUNTY TODAY!
The town of Keokuk, Iowa was founded in 1847 by the Wright brothers. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1861, the Union army invaded Iowa and General Ulysses S. Grant visited Keokuk to lead the fight against the Confederacy. The town was destroyed in battle but rose again and became an important center for local commerce and industry. In 1945, Keokuk was merged into the larger city of Des Moines.
