Keokuk, Iowa is a town in Douglas County, Iowa, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–Des Moines metropolitan area. The first settler in Keokuk was George Hargrave in 1836. The town was platted on July 1, 1847 by order of Territorial Governor James K. Polk. The name "Keokuk" originated from the Sioux word meaning "rocky place." In 1857, the post office was founded and named after Captain John C. Keokuk who had been killed during a skirmish with Indians near this location on May 16th that year. A school and community hall were built around this time but they were destroyed by a fire in 1957. A new Community Hall/School was built in 1959-1960 and dedicated by President John F Kennedy on September 14th 1960 as part of his America's New Frontier program which aimed to promote social justice through education. In 1969, Keokuk became an agricultural center when Monsanto purchased a farm here for itsseed corn operation and began producing ethanol from corn plants there (the first such production in Iowa). In 1984, Keokuk celebrated its centennial with an outdoor parade led by Mayor Tom Stafford and attended by state officials including then-Governor Terry Branstad In recent years, Keokek has become known for their annual Pumpkinfest which features music, pumpkin carving contests and other activities throughout the weekend

The Keokuk Massacre took place on July 9, 1871, when a group of Sioux Indians attacked and killed nine white men and boys at the town of Keokuk, Iowa. The massacre was one of the deadliest events in American Indian history.
