During the 20th century Keokuk experienced many changes: it became an agricultural community after being designated as an urban area; it became known for its "prairie chicken" nickname due to their widespread distribution across much of central Iowa; and it saw significant growth in retail businesses before becoming known primarily for its agricultural products
