In the early 1800s, a man by the name of John Johnston developed a lighted torch that could be held in one hand. The Johnston Torch was America's first self-contained handgun and it became popular for hunting and law enforcement purposes. It is also known as the "Johnston Rifle" because it was used to shoot game during the American Revolution. As technology advanced, so too did Johnstons firearms. In 1876, he developed the first practical handgun using gas operated valves instead of traditional percussion firing mechanisms. This weapon, called the Stonington Pistol, became wildly successful and helped make Johnston an international figure in firearms development. By World War I, Johnston had become well-known as an expert arms manufacturer and inventor. He continued to make firearms until his death in 1941. Johnston was founded on October 3, 1871 by George Johnston and his wife, Anna. The town grew up around the Johnston-Crawford Manufacturing Company, which manufactured guns and other firearms products. In 1906, the company merged with Winchester Firearms Corporation to form Winchester Repeating Arms Company.
Johnston is a town in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is the second most populous town in Johnson County after Council Bluffs. The first settler in Johnston was Charles Goodyear. He and his family arrived from Illinois on July 14, 1847. The Goodyears founded a small log cabin on the now abandoned site of what is now the south side of Johnston's downtown square. A post office was established in 1849, and by 1860 only one building remained standing in the settlement: a three-story frame store with a two-story belfry. The store closed its doors for good in 1881 when it was destroyed by fire. The first school in Johnston opened in December 1861 under teacher Eli Loomis. Classes were held each day from 7 to 10 am until February 1862 when classes were moved to the old high school due to construction projects around town that year. In 1865 classes were moved back to the old high school due to funding issues and it burned down again soon afterwards; this time however not before teaching staff had managed to save all but one of their classrooms including an armoire used as a desk for students (it still stands today). In 1870 Union Academy Elementary School opened which operated until 1918 when it became part of Johnston High School; since then it has been home to both Johnston High School and Johnson County Agricultural Center which also includes a farmstead museum and other exhibits along with classrooms for special needs students as well as current day administration offices. In recent years there have been efforts made by residents of Johnston to increase tourism dollars by hosting events such as rodeo weekends, agricultural fairs, 4th of July celebrations etc.; these have met with mixed success however without significant investment or growth over time they continue slowly declining which overall has impacted community coffers quite significantly over time (Seebelow). In 1865 commercial development began west of town on present day US Highway 80 where today there are several businesses including an auto dealership/repair shop, grain elevator/storage facility etc.; this area also saw some modest residential growth starting around 1920 with many new homes being built near US Highway 80 & 16th Street though much less substantial than east side development which continued unabated until about 1970 although some modest apartment buildings have since been erected east of US Highway 80 since then (See below). Johnston was laid out according to Iowa General Assembly Order No 2 Letter D dated October 17th 1865 specifically regarding towns within Johnson County - "No township shall be established outside . . . [the] limits hereinbefore set forth without written approval from said assembly". This order effectively placed Johnston within Johnson County's central government making it subordinate only insofar as tax collection and government services were concerned whereaseastsideCouncilBluffs did not fall within similar bounds and therefore experienced more systematic township subdivision throughout its history culminating primarily during World War II when eastern councils were merged into larger cities like Omaha through what came to be known as "Operation Navajo" while western councils continued functioning unchanged albeit under different name(s) until they too were merged into larger cities during postwar Thunderdome period). This arrangement effectively gave eastsideCouncilBluffs' mayor & council members complete control over municipal affairs whilewestsideJohnsonCounty residents enjoyed limited say vis-à-vis taxation & services while suburban residents located outside city boundaries essentially got no representation whatsoever save for voting at village meetings where various matters relating thereto would be passed off largely unconnected with their individual neighborhoods thereby giving rise ultimately eithertofrustration or support among those residing inside city limits witherwelling somewhat passively or actively depending upon their own personal circumstances rather than anything emanating from city hall).
