Johnston, Iowa is a small town in the southern portion of the state of Iowa. The population was 2,451 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City metropolitan area. Johnston, Iowa was founded in 1839 by Americans John and Abigail Johnston. The Johnston family had come from Virginia and were farmers who developed the town on the west side of the state. The first settlers arrived in 1830 and built a log cabin on the current site of Johnston. By 1839, they had organized a town government, erected a courthouse and schoolhouse, and started trading with other towns in Iowa. In 1840, they donated land to build a new community on the east side of the state. That same year, they married Anna Dickinson, daughter of Governor David Dickinson of Pennsylvania. Anna helped to start the first cotton gin in Iowa and became an important local leader. In 1846-47, she served as Mayor of Johnston and in 1850-51 as Town Treasurer. When her husband died in 1857, Anna took over his farming operations and continued to lead the community until her death in 1870. She is buried at nearby Mount Pleasant Cemetery
