Johnston was founded in 1854 by John A. Johnston, a surveyor and politician who served as the first Mayor of Johnston. The town was named after John A. Johnston's older brother, also called John A., who had founded the town in 1849. The townsite was originally located on the east side of the Des Moines River, but it relocated to its current location in 1872 when the river became too wide for a small community to exist within its original boundaries.
