Johnston, Iowa is a town of about 15,000 people located in east-central Iowa. The population was estimated to be 16,711 as of the 2010 census. Johnston’s history dates back to 1847 when two men named John and James Johnston arrived on the scene of what would become the town. The first post office called Johnston was established in 1853. The town began growth thanks to its location by the intersection of two wagon trails which led from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Sioux City, Nebraska. These trails were used by Native Americans for trade and transportation purposes as well as for hunting and gathering. In 1871, residents voted to incorporate as a city. By 1912, the population had grown to over 20,000 people and it became an agricultural center with cotton production accounting for most of the town’s income. However, during World War I Johnston was one of several towns that lost their citizens because they refused to produce food for troops stationed in Europe. This resulted in a decline in industry and employment within the community until after World War II when agriculture again became a mainstayofthe economy. In 1951-1952, local resident Clarence Buehler organized an American Rifle Association shooting competition at nearby Mount Carmel Reservoir which is now known as MidWest Gun Club Championship Course. On December 14th of that year residents voted to annex portions of Grimes County which bordered on Johnston just east of Highway 6 north of GRIMESVILLE while still keeping their own government separate from Amesbury Township; this annexation created what is now known as Ankeny Township adjacent to Grimes County lines southward into Johnston proper while still maintaining control over their own schools and other municipal functions
