Johnston, Iowa is a small town located in the northwestern corner of the state of Iowa. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by Cedar Rapids to the east, Grimes to the west and Dubuque to the north. The history of Johnston begins with James A. Johnston who emigrated from Scotland in 1847 and settled in what is now Johnston County, Iowa. He started a grocery store and later became an agricultural contractor. In 1869, he built a flour mill on Lemon Creek which still stands today. In 1902, he donated land for a public school and also donated money for new buildings including the first post office building in Johnston County. In 1915, John Fenton established his farmstead here and it remained in use until 2003 when it was purchased by Iowan Community College District #1 for use as their main campus. In 2003-2004, Iowan Community College District #1 funded Hurricane Katrina relief efforts through their partnership with Gulf Coast Restoration Corporation (GCRC). GCRC dedicated their facility to teaching students about hurricane restoration techniques during that time period which included rebuilding homes and helping turn around businesses that were lost during the storm. Today, Johnston continues to be known as one of America’s most historic towns due to its rich history associated with agriculture and education both locally and nationally. The town has been home to many famous people such as historian Will Rogers who lived here from 1901-1902; actor Kirk Douglas who spent his early years here; basketball coach Rick Majerus; author Stieg Larsson; scientists Neil Armstrong and Edwin Hubble; as well as many other notable individuals throughout its history

There are also several businesses located within the limits of Johnston including an auto dealership, welding shop, grain elevator and farm equipment dealership.
