Johnston, Iowa is a small town located in Johnson County. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County and the only municipality within Johnson County. Johnston began as an agricultural community in 1851 when James W. Johnston founded the farmstead called "Prairie View." A post office was established in 1855, and by 1860 there were nineteen residents living on the farmstead. By 1870, Prairie View had grown to include a school, a sawmill, and three stores. In 1881, Prairie View became part of Johnston when it was annexed into the township of Johnston. The first store opened in Johnston in 1881. The present-day downtown area of Johnston was built around this time. The township of Johnston contained several other small towns before it merged with Township County to form Johnson County in 1912. This consolidation created many jobs for local people and allowed for more development within the larger county government. At its peak, Township County contained over one hundred businesses and fifteen schools inside its boundaries. Today, few if any businesses remain inside the borders of Johnson County proper; most have relocated to elsewhere within or outside of Iowa because of economic opportunities offered by modern day technology (such as internet).
