American Armory produced rifles and handguns under a variety of brand names until it ceased production in 1957.

The mill produced goods such as lumber, flour, cheese, eggs and potatoes for local markets around town. The mill closed in 1978 but is still standing today with its original machinery intact. In 1898, Johnston residents voted to incorporate as a village under the name of "Johnston". This decision marked an important milestone for the community as it allowed for more centralized control over resources and development within the village limits which would later serve as an essential factor in its success story during subsequent decades. In 1951, Phembech Community Church was founded upon the suggestion of Methodist preacher Holland Howell Jr.. PCHC quickly became one of Johnston's most popular worship services with its congregation consisting primarily of farmers and their families living close by on long rural drives into nearby Ottumwa or Cedar Rapids for evening services only! Despite occasional challenges posed by heavy farming rains or icy roads during winter months (known locally as "The Great Freeze"), PCHC has been keeping pace with changing needs & trends throughout its history despite being located fewer than 1/4 mile from Main Street!! Today’s congregation consists mostly of retired adults plus some kids that have graduated from high school…..This church offers something very special – Connections To Heaven !!!
