In 1851, it was one of only two towns in Iowa to be granted a charter from the legislature. This allowed it to become an incorporated city with full government rights. In 1861, Johnstons donated land to build a courthouse and jail which served as the town's initial center of operations. The courthouse still stands today and is used as an event hall or museum occasionally.
