The community took its name from General James Johnston who fought for the Union during the American Civil War. A sawmill and gristmill were built around 1860, and a blacksmith shop followed soon thereafter. Manufacturing began to grow as looms became available to produce goods such as clothing and paper products. By 1900, Johnston had six stores, three hotels, four churches, two schools (one public and one private), a ball park, two businesses/handicrafts stores, a garage/workshop, five farms (three with cotton crops and two with other crops), thirteen residential lots (sixteen dwellings total)/, fifty-seven acres of land (), twelve miles of road surface (), four parks (), twenty-nine residences (). In 1924 an oil well was drilled near Johnston by Standard Oil Company; production began that year but stopped due to lack of water resources nearby. In 1933 an ice cream factory was built by Wm Clementson & Sons; it continues to be operational today as an agricultural museum
