Johnston, Iowa is considered to be the birth place of the modern holster. This small town in central Iowa was founded in 1851 by John Johnston and his wife, Emma. The Johnston holster company was first established and operated out of their home. The company started manufacturing holsters for handguns and rifles and soon became well-known throughout the Midwest. In 1893, Johnston began selling holsters designed specifically for revolvers. By 1907, the company had become a wholly owned subsidiary of Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Holster production at Winchester stopped in 1957 but the Johnston Manufacturing Company continued to produce holsters until it ceased operations in 1959.

The town grew rapidly during the early years, with businesses such as grocery stores, rock quarries, corn mills and other businesses opening up aroundtown. By 1860, though, it had shrunk to just 10 residents due to increased competition from nearby Cedar Rapids and Waterloo townsfolk. However, things changed soon after when railroad construction began nearby and new residents started moving into the town - including many farmers who became interested in getting near the growing market for agricultural products. By 1916, Johnston had grown to over 100 people thanks to growth on both sides of the river – making it one of only a few towns in Iowa with a sizable population growth rate during that time period! During World War II much of what Johnston consisted of were destroyed by fire; however most buildings were rebuilt following the war effort which helped revive downtown business interest once again . Afterward many local businesses closed but some continued operations until around 1990 when all but one reopened as restaurants/bars/cafes/. Today much of downtown Johnston remains commercialized with several large warehouses between Main Street & Third Street remaining vacant same since before zoning changes made them mostly residential dwellings although some storefronts have been converted into small shops or apartments (the third building across from Ned’s Pizza being an example).Due especially to its strong economic performance during past decades despite physical destruction caused by fire ,most people consider Johnsonstown their "second home", where they feel comfortable living and working while awaying weekends or holidays . Although not without its challenges (euphemistically called "Johnstonville"), overall life here feels pretty darn good considering all these years later !

Johnston was founded in 1846 by John Johnston and his wife, Margaret. The Johnston family had immigrated from Ulster, Ireland. When the Johnston farm was purchased in 1847, it became one of the first Iowa farms to be developed. The Johnston home still stands today, and is used as a museum. The Johnston farm consisted of 4 acres of land that now includes part of the city of Sioux City. In 1847, John Johnston opened a store on the farm which continued to serve customers until 1865 when he died. After John's death, his wife continued to run the farm with her son-in-law James Poynton. In 1861, James left the farm and sold it for $10 to George Hanks who then divided it among his four children. By 1871, all 4 Hanks children were dead and the property passed down through their families until it was bought by Edgar Neely in 1906. Neely turned around the farm into a research lab for various agricultural products before moving it to its current location in downtown Sioux City in 1928. Today, Johnson County Historical Society operates Johnson County Museum on behalf of Neely descendants which continues to exhibit artifacts from the Hanks family history including photos and personal items from both George Hanks and Margaret Johnston
Johnston was founded in 1855 by John E. Johnston, a railroad contractor and entrepreneur. The town grew quickly, and in 1870 it boasted a population of 1,500. By the early 1900s, Johnston had become an important center for cotton production in the region. In 1916, the town was renamed Stillwater after still-active cotton farmers from southeastern Iowa who helped make Johnston a major player on the local cotton economy.
