Johnston, IA is a small town in Crawford County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,351 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. Johnston was founded in 1853. In 1907, it became one of the first towns in Iowa to have a school system and police department. The Johnston Arms Armoury was built in 1909 by Captain John W. Johnston and his wife Sarah Hargrave Johnston. It is a National Historic Landmark and also has been designated as a State Historical Marker. The Johnston Arms Armoury is open daily from 9:00am to 4:00pm (except legal holidays). Admission is free for all visitors except for Captain John W. Johnston's widow Sarah Hargrave Johnston who charges $2 per person for entrance into the museum complex including all exhibits and gift shop items; her husband did not own any land within the town limits when he built the armory so admission does not include that fee. One of the most famous gun cases in history occurred at the Johnston Arms Armoury when Jesse James attempted to rob Ulysses S Grant during his visit to Sioux City, IA on November 5th 1881 . After robbing Grant's stagecoach near Saundersville outside of Sioux City, James jumped on top of the vehicle and fired two shots from his revolver into the back window before fleeing on foot into Indian Territory where he later killed himself Upon learning about this event Johnson decided to erect a large statue commemorating James' attempt at robbery which currently stands just north of downtown Sioux City off US-29/I-80

Gunsmithing also exploded during this time as people realized that they could now make their own firearms using modern tools and techniques.

Johnston was laid out in 1851 by John Dutton and named for General John Gardiner who fought in the Mexican-American War. Johnston's first post office opened in 1857. It closed in 1904. The town's first store was built on Second Street and operated until it burned down in 1907. The first school was built on Fourth Street and operated until it closed too also in 1907. The town's first pastor was Rev. Jephson Coggins who served from 1853 to 1865. In 1903, the community began to build a water tower which still stands today as a part of town hall square. Johnston has had two mayors since its inception: Myron Pyle (1957-1975) and Clifford Butters (1975-1981). Johnston is home to the Brickyard Museum which provides exhibits about local agriculture, manufacturing, trade unions and other aspects of early 20th century life hereabouts
