Johnston, Iowa is home to the first gun sights in the United States. The Kentucky Rifle and Pistol Club built a rough wooden target range in 1868. In 1876, the club moved to its present location on High Street. The first modern gun sight was installed here in 1925. It was a simple metal frame with a mirror that permitted shooters to aim at targets lying down or from any angle. Today, Johnston'sgun sights are some of the most advanced in the world. Johnston, Iowa is home to the world's first "3-Gun" shooting event. Held in 1903, the event was part of a national championship series sponsored by the National Rifle Association.
Johnston is a small town in far northwest Iowa, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Des Moines–area. The town was founded in 1847 and named for General James Johnston, an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. The first post office opened in 1851. Johnston has a large agricultural sector with crops such as corn, beans, potatoes, wheat, barley and millet; cattle farming; horticulture; and forestry products such as pineapples, apples and chestnuts. Many businesses are based here: a grocery store (J&R's), two banks (First National Bank and Peoples National Bank), several churches (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints/United Methodist Church and Lutheran Church of America), a health clinic (Iowa Health Services), two factories (Humble Grain Millinery Company and J & R Weldon Creamery) as well as many workshops including a blacksmith shop, carpenter shop, feed mill, foundry, tailor shop etc.. The Johnston community also has its own football team which plays in the Mid-States Football League (Minn.-Lansing Nonpareil). The team played its first game on November 3rd 1898 against Davenport City High School

It was established on the same day as Sioux City, Iowa and it was named after Captain James Cook who explored this part of North America in 1795-96. Captain Cook's Expedition discovered the Missouri River and named it after himself. The first settler in Johnston was John MacArthur who arrived in 1851 with his five children from Scotland. He built a cabin near where present-day State Fairgrounds are located. The Johnston family would later donate land to make way for what is now State Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds were originally called "Tenth Day Park." In 1907, the fairgrounds were renamed "Johnston Park" in honor of JohnSTON'S father, General James WOODBURY Johnsons great grandson who served as Governor of Iowa during World War I and II).
Johnston was founded in 1854 by John C. Johnston, a pioneer farmer and rancher. The town grew rapidly during the early years of its existence, with residents influxing from all over the state. By 1870, Johnston had become a significant community with its own school and courthouse. In 1876, the city was renamed Iowa City after Iowa's capital city, Des Moines. The population of Johnston continued to grow throughout the 19th century, reaching a peak of around 100 people in 1920. However, accelerated development and economic prosperity eventually led to a Decrease in population to under 50 people by 1940. Today, Johnston is a small farming community located within Polk County about an hour's drive west of Des Moines.
