This development involved building housing developments on both sides of Highway 6 north of downtown Des Moines and creating many jobs for locals while also providing access to regional businesses and transportation options outside of downtown Des Moines. Although these initiatives did not bring much economic prosperity during their time period, they are still considered part of Des Moines' history because they helped make it one of America's largest metropolitan areas by 1910%. Johnston, Iowa was first settled in 1847 by John T. Johnston and his wife Rebecca. The town was named after Johnston's father, James T. Johnston, who also founded the town of Mason City. The population of Johnston grew to about 100 people in 1850 and 300 people by 1860. In 1871, the railroad arrived in the town, making it a more convenient location for farmers and ranchers to sell their products. The town developed into a small farming community with several businesses including a mercantile store, a blacksmith shop, and a hotel. By the early 1920s, the population had decreased to about 50 people due to factors such as World War I and II which took away jobs in agriculture. However, the economy of Johnston revived during the 1960s when it became home to three universities: UI-Iowa State University (founded in 1861), Drake University (founded in 1875), and Northern Illinois University (established in 1898).
