In 1871, OSM granted Johnston a post office which remains in operation today. The early years of Johnston were difficult due to its location on the edge of a large Indian reservation and its lack of transportation options. However, through hard work, determination and innovation, the community slowly began to improve over time. In 1916, Johnston became home to its first school which helped spur economic development. By 1922, there were 9 businesses in Johnson City and over 100 residents! Today, Johnston is still an important center for trade and commerce within central Iowa.
Johnston was founded in 1847 by James A. Johnston, a Methodist minister and landowner. The town motto was "Erected to the Glory of God." In 1861, Johnston was named the capital of Iowa after that state's admission into the Union. By 1870, Johnston had a population of 753. It declined during the Great Sioux War (1876-81) and Reconstruction (1877-1913). It increased during World War II when President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the United States' military headquarters from Springfield, Illinois, to Johnston in 1942. The town lost its status as capital in 1999 when Des Moines became the new regional capital of Iowa.
