Johnston, Iowa is a small town of about 10,000 people that was founded in 1875. The town is named for General John S. Johnston who served as the military governor of Iowa from 1865-1868 and died in office at the age of 43 years. The Johnston Rifle and shotgun company was founded in 1875 by Fayette County farmer James G. Hardin and his partner, J.C. Bigham. The company produced rifles and shotguns until it merged with the National Firearms Association (NFA) in 1934 to form the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). NSSF manages firearms manufacturing and trade associations across America, including Johnston Rifle & Shotgun Company which remains active today producing muzzleloaders, pistols and shotguns under the name “National Arms”. Johnston has been home to several rifle manufacturers over the years including Winchester, Browning, Remington, Savage Arms, Ruger carbines and revolvers as well as shotguns like Mossbergs (which became part of Smith & Wesson), Benelli pumpguns (becoming Beretta) and Colt revolvers (becoming Glocks). Pistol production also continues with several companies making handguns like Glock 17s for law enforcement agencies as well as Sig Sauer P226s for concealed carry use. Ammunition production has included both factory-manufactured rounds such as 9mm Luger ammunition developed by Heckler & Koch AG along with imported ammo from Europe such as .44 Magnum cartridges from Spain and Italy. Johnston is a small city in northwest Iowa, United States. It was founded in 1853 by John W. Johnston as the town of Cedar Rapids. The population was 11,857 at the 2010 census. The Cedar Rapids–Pope Lake Micropolitan Statistical Area has a population of 30,959. Johnston is named after John W. Johnston, a cadet in the Union Army who served during the American Civil War and later became an general in the Union army and governor of Nebraska. He donated land to the city for its first school district in 1851 and it incorporated as a borough on November 3, 1852. In 1865, Johnston merged with neighboring Pope Lake to form what is now the Johnson City Micropolitan Statistical Area. Johnston was settled primarily by Methodists from North Carolina and Kentucky who came overland through Indian Territory during the 1850s to escape slavery then found work on local railroads or homesteading areas near present-day Cedar Rapids and Pope Lake before coming to Iowa Territory in 1853 when Lincoln issued his Kansas-Nebraska Act which opened up Iowa Territory to settlement by non-native Americans. Many of these early settlers were also entrepreneurs: Wm Dillard established Dillard's Emporium grocery store on Main Street in 1861; John May started May & Company clothing stores around this time; James Hickey built Hickey's Bakery around 1862; George Clements set up Clements' Mercantile Exchange along State Highway 9 south of Cedar Rapids; Prentice Mott developed Mott's millinery business along East Harper Avenue (now US 20) north of town; Other early businesses included Jno Boulware’s meat market where cornmeal doughnuts were cooked until they turned hard enough for eating, Averill Harriman’s dry goods store west of town (later Harriman’s Furniture), Jno Moffitt’s blacksmith shop east of town (later Moffitt’s Grain Elevator), Thos Fenton’s hotel west side (later Fenton Drug Store), “The Smith House” tavern east side (later First National Bank building) – all operated until the late 19th century except for Gillett Bros., hardware store which operated continuously from 1830 until 1947 Some residents moved away during this period such as Methodist preacher Rev Rufus Jones who arrived here from Ohio in 1855 In 1860 citizens voted 2-to-1 against incorporation into any municipality due to lack of support but eventually did so On April 15, 1893 Johnston amalgamated with adjacent Pope Lake which had also been Municipality #2 established on January 1 that year under pressure from residents because their community lacked water supplies and services while both towns continued to operate separately . On October 10th 1898 Johnson merged with surrounding Polk County forming what is known today as the Polk City Micropolitan Statistical Area

Johnston was founded by John A. Johnston in 1892 as a settlement on a small creek near what is now West Des Moines. The town developed gradually and primarily consisted of farmers and their families until it became an incorporated city in 1907. In 1960, Johnston incorporated as a city with a population of 54,711 people The history of Johnston begins with John A. Johnston, who came to this location in 1892 when he first arrived in central Iowa looking for land to settle on. He found that there were few other settlers here and began building his home on the site that he purchased from James Pomeroy about two miles east of present-day Johnston. The house still stands today and has been used as a museum since 1967 Johnston quickly became known for its agriculture products and animal grazing ability which made it one of the most important towns in central Iowa during its early years. By 1910, agricultural production had increased so much that Johnston decided to move downtown to make more space available for businesses and residents In addition to its role as an important center for trade and commerce, Johnston also served as an important stop on stagecoaches travelling between Des Moines and Chicago during those days During World War II many jobs were created here thanks to munitions manufacturing done by local companies such as American Arsenal In recent years many aspects of life have changed including suburbanization within walking distance of downtown where most residents live now
Johnston was founded in 1851 by John C. Johnston and his wife, Clarissa. The town was named for John C. Johnston's older brother, James A. Johnston, Sr., who had settled nearby in 1847. The first post office opened in 1865, and the first store was built in 1867. In 1886, the town became a city under Iowa City Mayor Charles Wirths. In 1912, the city annexed Johnston to Iowa City.
