Johnston and his family. It became a city in 1907 and then a village in 1945. The primary economic activity of Johnston has been agriculture, with some manufacturing also taking place over time. The community currently has a population of less than 1,000 people. Johnston was named after John Hance Johnston, an early settler in what is now Johnston County. In 1851, Johnston and his family moved from Illinois to what is now Johnston County after finding land for sale there. They built a log cabin on the west side of the current town square, which still stands today. The first school in Johnston was built in 1855 by teacher Mrs. Anna Hebardt. The first post office opened in 1865 and was called Battle Creek because it served as the border between Battle Creek Township (now Johnson) and Polk Township (now Cedar Rapids). The name change came about because postmasters at that time were elected instead of appointed by the governor or legislatures like they are now. In 1870, fire destroyed most of the townsquare but not their log cabin which still stands today! When rebuilt, this building became one of the largest frame structures in Iowa until it burned down again in 1951. The second schoolhouse also burned down but was replaced soon afterwards with a larger one which still stands today! This building served as both schools until 1978 when it burned down again! In 1951, another fire caused extensive damage to nearby homes but no injuries were reported; this event is sometimes referred to as "Clinton Day." After that fire, local officials decided to build an all-weather road through town so that residents would have easy access to work outside without fear of fires happening inside their homes again . The new street was named Main Street after then-Governor Robert Blythe's wife – who had donated money for its construction! Today, Main Street serves as shopping and dining center for locals and tourists alike during local events such as Fourth Of July fireworks displays or farmer's markets!
