When the Johnston Massacre happened on November 15, 1881, it was one of the deadliest shootings in American history. Eight people were killed and thirteen others were wounded when two gunmen opened fire on a group of men hunting deer near the town of Johnston. The shooting left locals terrified and desperate for safety. As a result, the state legislature passed a bill making it illegal to carry firearms without a license. Johnston is a town in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1854 by John Sargent Johnston and his brothers-in-law George Washington Dixon and David Aiken. The name Johnston comes from General John Johnston who fought against Native Americans in the Dakota War of 1862. In 1875, Johnston's nephews built a small log mill on the edge of town to help produce flour for local farmers. The mill closed in 1935 but its flour remains a popular commodity today. In 1906, Johnston became the first incorporated municipality in Johnson County when it was created from parts of Clear Lake and Cherry Creek townships. In 1912, it added a post office and began to grow rapidly with new businesses opening up around the mill including an insurance company, real estate agent, car dealership and grocery store. By 1938, its population had reached 2,000 people and by 1953 had increased to 4,500 residents. It was during this time that Johnston started developing into what it is today: an agricultural community with several farms servicing surrounding municipalities as well as some large manufacturing companies such as Useless No More Paper Mills Inc., which manufactured paper products until 1997; All American Paper Products which made uniforms for military service until 1984; Dairy Queen; KFC (now Pizza Hut); AutoZone; Sears Roebuck & Co.; Burger King; Jiffy Lube Oil Company;; UPS (now United Parcel Service). Part of the pull for development came from its location at the junction of two major highways: I-465/Iowa Highway 20 eastbound and US Highway 25 westbound which led to easy access to both rural areas across Johnson County as well as Cedar Rapids city limits on the north side of I-465 where many new homes were being built at that time. Another big force behind growth came from Interstate 285 which connected Cedar Rapids directly with Des Moines via I-95 southbound while also serving as a path connecting eastern Iowa with Illinois and Wisconsin via Chicago downtown before terminating at Kinnickinnic River Bridge just south of Kinnickinnic Falls on I-94 exit 10A (today’s Business Loop) near Sioux City. This highway not only helped makejohnston an important transportation hub but also allowed businesses to expand their reach into other counties within Johnson County without having to leave town – something that continues today with several stores located outside of town along I-25 or US Highway 169 including Jiffy Lube Oil Company;; Home Depot;; Lowe’s;;ascension homebuilders}. In recent years there has been much discussion about changes taking place within Johnson County due largely to urban sprawl - specifically withinrepresented by Cedar Rapids – however despite this growth there has been little change within Johnston itself other than more people living close unto one another instead of scattered throughout different municipalities like they once did..

Johnston, Iowa is a small town in central Iowa. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines-West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Johnston were the Kapp family who settled near what is now Johnson City in 1847. By 1860, there were five families living here and nine businesses had been established. In 1871, a post office was established and by 1888 it had a population of 350 residents. The railroad arrived in Johnston in 1892 and helped to spur development as people came to find work on the new tracks. In 1907, an oil well was drilled in this community and when production began later that year, many citizens saw its potential and started purchasing land around it for homes. The oil boom ended after only two years but the town continued growing thanks to its location and strong economy. In 1960, Johnston became one of six communities within the newly formed city of West Des Moines through annexation of neighboring townships. This trend continued until 1974 when all but three of the township's residents left for economic reasons due to recession within city limits at that time. In 1990, following passage of legislation creating West Des Moines as an independent municipality, Johnston rejoined city Limits - becoming once again a self-sufficient community with its own government including fire department, police department and library system! Today's economy revolves around health care services (including mental health treatment) as well as agricultural products such as corn ethanol production facilities located outside of town limits on adjoining farmssteads; these activities generate much local revenue which helps support local schools and other civic institutions
Johnston, Iowa was founded in 1847 by Captain David Johnston and his wife, Elizabeth. The town had a population of only 10 people when it was founded, but it grew rapidly thanks to the arrival of railroad workers and new settlers. By 1871, Johnston had a population of over 100 people. The town prospered until the Great Depression made things difficult. After the stock market crash, Johnston experienced a rapid decline in population and economic stability. In the 1970s, however, Johnston began to experience a resurgence as an agricultural center due to its good soil and climate. Today, Johnston is home to a small community of around 150 residents that continues to grow thanks to its strong economy and excellent infrastructure.
