Johnston was founded in 1854 by John and Anna Johnston. The town was named after Anna's maternal grandfather, Robert Johnston, who had emigrated from Scotland in 1824. Robert had arrived in Iowa Territory on horseback and found a land grant from the United States government. He built a cabin near what is now Johnston City and started farming the land. In 1851, he married Anna, also from Scotland, and the couple moved to Johnston City. They continued to live there until their death in 1915. The town of Johnston was located on the edge of present-day Johnson County on the Missouri River at its confluence with the Des Moines River. It lay along a natural trade route between points on the Great Plains and eastern Illinois, where goods were shipped downriver for shipment back upriver again. The town grew rapidly due to its location and because it became an important stop on stagecoaches traveling betweenIowa City(then Cedar Rapids)and Topeka(now Kansas). By 1865, Johnston had become an important railroad junction as well as a commercial center for surrounding counties. In 1907, local ranchers formed the first agricultural society in Iowa Territory; this group aimed to promote agriculture by working together to improve conditions for farmers and help them grow their crops better than before. That same year, local businesses organized themselves into what is now called "the Grain Producers' Association." This group helped support growth of agriculture in Iowa through donations of technology and marketing resources such as seed stocks, machinery, advice about planting techniques, learned how best to price products so that they could be sold profitably., In 1918, local school board members established a high school which served all of Johnson County including Johnston City
